What Kinds of Trees Can You Find in the Alberta Tree Register?

Heritage Trees

Heritage is not easy to define, but generally heritage tree tell a story. A heritage tree may have been planted by a specific person, group, or to commerate a date or event.

Large or Old Veteran Trees

The Alberta Tree Register contains many trees that are large or old. Almost all large trees are old, but not all old trees are large. Others may not be that old in absolute years but may be very old for their species.

Uncommon Trees

Sometimes trees are added to the Alberta Tree Register becuase they are a rare or uncommon species for Alberta. Other times they are added because they have an unusual growth habit or are surviving is an unlikley environment.

Loved Trees

Sometimes a tree doesn’t quite fit any of the other categories but is loved so much that someone wants to celebrate it by adding it to the tree register. We often think of these trees as “future” heritage trees and include grade 1 trees, or trees planted to celebrate the birth or passing of a loved on.
